One Laptop per Criminal?

One Laptop per Child box torn apart

On Wednesday, July 9th, we announced the winners from our "Tell a friend" contest. We received a lot of great submissions, and three talented winners got to choose between one of the following sweet prizes:

  • A brand new mobile phone
  • A Nintendo Wii
  • An XO OLPC, the famous $100 laptop

Long time community member Tamil chose the XO OLPC and he started waiting eagerly for the arrival of his new super cool computer...

And today (Thursday, August 21st) he finally received it, but the parcel was torn apart —and even worse— there was no XO OLPC inside! It had been stolen! What gives!?

The plot thickens....

During our investigations today we've discovered that the parcel arrived empty and torn in India, so the OLPC has been stolen already before arrival in India.

Don't worry Tamil, we're on the case, and we will replace your stolen laptop! There shall be no such thing as "One Laptop per Criminal".

Thats a negative prospect. We mustn't start blaming off authorities after incidents. Afterall, incidents do happen!!

Wow...that totally blows ass. :irked: How incredibly messed up.

Next time you should package all prizes with one of those ink bomb things banks use! That way if anyone other than the intended recipient opens it, they get a face full of ink! (or Napalm...whichever. )

By Nerak, # 21. August 2008, 20:56:10

Who knows how rich you would be by now, if not for the people who always steal your packages

having been born and lived in India for most of my life, but now in Canada (thats right opera, Canada, the country you forgot to visit)... i would say its the indian postal system. a lot of things used to get stolen there in the postage, as the post service people make very little money. most of the times the prize got to me, it was because it either wasnt marked on the box or the prize was of very little value...

its not hard to mark something "torn and empty" eventhough such was done by the indian postage system themsleves. not hard especially with all the corruption there. I'm not calling India a bad country, but hey... lets not be blind to the corruption there.

its nice of Opera community to take care of it though, next time send it through a service like fed ex and dont mark what it is P:
Tamil would know the contents as soon as he sees an OPLC sized box anyways.

Hey Opera, I think you should have packaged your price and checked them carefully even before announcing! It's so sorry for Tamil. But anyway, I hope the thief (thieves) will soon be caught!!!

This is August, not April. @EspenaO

:troll: Sorry Tamil if the story is true. You know you were my member of the year but unfortunately I'm not a money man like Opera. I think its the only reason why i didn't give you a "THING".
